History and use
This timber plane was made and used by David Spencer. As an engineer David Spencer was proficient at making his own tools and for making timber patterns from which he cast machine parts. It appears that he worked as a contractor on the North Coast railway line extension in the late 1890s and as a contractor at the Ipswich Railway Workshops before relocating to Brisbane by the end of 1905 and establishing his own business. David Spencer made more than ten motorcycles and is credited with making the first wholly Australian-made motorcycle.
