History and use
The Commonwealth Games sporting competition is staged every four years for participants from Commonwealth Nations. The first official Commonwealth Games was held in Hamilton Canada in 1930 under the name of the 'British Empire Games’. Since 1958, a parchment message for the Opening Ceremony of the Commonwealth Games has been delivered in a specially designed Relay Baton with a hollow centre. This Relay Baton from the 1982 Games, held in Brisbane, was made from a composite of wattle timber sourced from all parts of Australia. It has been embellished with Australian silver, sapphire and amethysts, with the internal cavity made from silver plated brass. This baton travelled by relay 15000 kilometres from London to Brisbane and was a finally opened at the Games Opening Ceremony by His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.
