History and use
This steam locomotive headlight was built and supplied to Queensland Railways probably in the 1950s. It may have been supplied with a batch of BB18 1/4 Class Locomotives built by Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England.

An electric headlight, it was manufactured by J. Stone in the United Kingdom. The use of Stones’ headlights was uncommon in Queensland Railways' steam locomotives as the majority of headlights were supplied by the Pyle National Co. Up until 1916 only kerosene headlights had been in service and after that date electric headlights from Pyle were normally used. The first locomotives fitted with electric headlights, which were more reliable, were those used on unfenced country lines such as the line from Brisbane to Cunnamulla. This type of headlight was therefore relatively rare.
