History and use
This is an eharo mask, made in the Gulf region of Papua New Guinea. Masks like this are used in rituals, and may depict ancestral and/or totemic spirits - in this case in the shape of what is probably a hornbill. The mask is made from bark cloth, over a cane frame, and is painted white, red and black.
This mask was acquired by the Queensland Museum in 1913 from S. G. MacDonell, trader and general merchant who was based in Port Moresby and Orokolo in Papua New Guinea.
