History and use
This woven bag from Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, was collected by Captain W H Lawrence between 1883 and 1900. During this time he was working on various labour trade vessels involved in the transportation of South Sea Islanders to Queensland to work in the sugar fields as a cheap form of labour.

South Sea Islanders made significant contributions to Queensland yet very little is known today about their history and culture. Today, the South Sea Islander descendants are officially recognised as a unique cultural group called, Australian South Sea Islanders.

This bag is part of the Australian South Sea Islander Kastom Collection at the Queensland Museum.
