History and use
This bark cloth is very fine and delicate, and therefore is very different in texture from other bark cloth from elsewhere in the Pacific (like Samoa and Fiji) which can be very durable and heavy.

This bark cloth (or lepau) from Santa Cruz in the Solomon Islands became a part of Queensland Museum's Collections in 1899. Not much is known about use and manufacture of lepau in Santa Cruz, as its production slowed signficantly since 1930.

Lepau cloths can be worn like an apron, or on the head.

This particular lepau is featured in the "Paperskin: Bark Cloth of the Pacific" exhibition travelling around Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand in 2010.
