History and use
This wooden sculpture depicts the national emblem of Papua New Guinea. The emblem, which features a bird of paradise, a Kundu drum and ceremonial spear, was introduced in Papua New Guinea as a result of the National Identity Act 1971. The Act, which was intended to encourage national identity and unity in Papua New Guinea, also established the national flag, pledge and anthem as well as other official ceremonies and protocols of State.

Carved wooden emblems such as this are popular items made for sale to tourists in contemporary Papua New Guinea. This particular example also features a painted design on the reverse side of the sculpture.
