Description
Sculpture, Malagan mouth ornament, head of hornbill, held by mouth of fish. Turbo pelothus opercula eyes.
Head of fish ends with a wooden bit, covered with intricate framework of bush fibres.
Opercula set into the eye portion of mask, represent eyes.

Beads are strung behind right eye fixture.

History and use
Wooden hornbill heads are one of the most common forms of dance ornament in New Ireland.

The dancer holds the small wooden bit in his teeth and dances in imitation of the movements of the bird.
