History and use
This set of four shell armlets is from Papua New Guinea, and dates from the late 19th or early 20th century.

The armlets are made from trochus shell, which has been cut and polished to create a thin ring. Such ornaments are worn by both men and women in Melanesia.

These items were acquired by the Queensland Museum in the 1920s and were formetly from the collection of W.E Parry-Okeden, Immigration Agent and Inspector of Pacific Islanders (1886-1889), and Police Commissioner (1895-1905).
