History and use
This is a sherd of pottery from a vessel. Pottery sherds are broken pieces of pottery, often with irregularly shaped broken edges. How do we know what part of a vessel a sherd came from? Sherds can be classified into one of three categories: rim sherds, body sherds, and base sherds. Rim sherds are tte most informative and easy to classify and tell us what kind of rim a vessel had: inslanting, flared or vertical. The curvature of this piece suggests that it is from the body of a vessel.
