Partial ceramic Roman roof tile, called tegula. Tegula are square to rectangular shaped flat tiles with a ridge on the end. This example is incomplete.

History and use
Roman buildings were protected with tiles comprised of two different pieces. The flat tiles, tegula, had flat ridges on both ends and were laid next to each other on wooden roof battens. The curved tile, imbrex, overlapped the edges of the tegula - bridging the gap and making the roof waterproof. The open end of the imbrex was often terminated with a decorative tile.
