History and use
Moulded decorated pottery pieces are often depicted with mythological scenes and were often stamped with the name or seal of the producing workshop of factory. This fragment retains a portion of its rim decoration, possibly once a larger band around the rim, with raised pattern of garland of thrones or fillet. This piece may be an example of African terra sigillata - also known as African red slip ware. Terra sigillata is also known as Samian ware. This vessel could have been made in one of the Roman provinces in North Africa.
