History and use
Mirrors, tweezers, razors and kohl (eyeliner) represent complex notions of gender, status, sexuality, and the construction of personal image and identity. These Roman bronze tweezers are a relatively standard type of Roman depilation tweezers, used primarily for removing body hair. Removing hair was fashionable amongst men and women. It is remarkable that this item is still recognisable today, over 1800 years after being forged. A decorative element is provided by the addition of two small parallel lines at the top of the tweezers.
