History and use
This cane knife came from a Sugar Cane farm at Erakala in Mackay. It has a deliberate bend in the blade. Most South Sea Islander cane cutters preferred a bent blade to give them purchase when cutting the cane.
Cane knives are particularly symbolic to Australian South Sea Islanders as it was their manual labour that established the Queensland sugar industry.
