History and use
Romans made vessels of both pottery and glass. Glass vessels would often break, and Romans would recycle glass fragments.Glassmakers would add batches of broken vessels into the raw material from which they fashioned new items. Widespread recycling of glass was not commun until around 70 AD, and may have been a product of limited availability of raw materials during a period of heightened military activity. Glassmakers turned to melting already existing products or broken glass, to meet demands in a time of shortage.
