History and use
This object is a souveneir paperweight in the form of a model of the Egyptian Sphinx, with heiroglyphs on the base possibly representing Thutmose III. Similar objects made of clay were collected by service personell in the First World War (1914-1918) which were acquired as personal souvineers and gifts. The form of object remained popular through to the 1930s when this was collected by a tourist visiting Egypt.
