History and use
In Hmong tradition, silver jewellery symbolises wealth and prosperity and was used as a form of wealth accumulation and also for gift exchange. As well as for personal ornament, jewellery also functions as a spiritual and magic device: worn around the neck and wrists it is believed to bind the soul to the body. Chain links, lock-shaped pendants and keys provide further insurance against the escape of the soul.
