Description
Small, decorative RITO and turtle-shell mat. The white RITO is plaited in a circular design around a central disc of turtle-shell. Outer edge of the plaited circular section finishes with a knotted fringe.

History and use
This mat was made for sale to tourists in the Cook Islands. The piece has been woven from rito- the young, inner leaves of a coconut palm. Rito weaving is a distinctive Cook Islands artform and is used to make hats, fans and other ornaments.
