Inclusions to make the clay less sticky, reduce shrinkage, increase resistance to thermal shock and strength prior to firing.
History and use
This pottery fragment is from the rim and body of a vessel. A small portion of the rounded lip of the rim is visible, representing the uppermost part of the vessel. The remainder of the sherd represents the body of hte vessel the curvature of which suggests it once belonged to a relatively straight sided bowl. The outside was decorated with well executed circular design.
