History and use
This white and black barkcloth from Collingwood Bay, Papua New Guinea was collected by Sir William Macgregor and accepted into the Queensland Museum’s collections on the 1st March 1897. At the time of collection Macgregor was an Administrator of British New Guinea (between 1889 and 1898) and later became Governor of Queensland. Macgregor had a background in medicine with scientific and humanitarian interests. He collected this material during his inspections through out the Papuan landscape. Macgregor had hoped that this collection would be kept in trust for the Papuan people. In keeping with Macgregor’s vision, Queensland Museum repatriated material back to the Papua New Guinea National Museum between 1983 and 1995.
