History and use
This type of carriage were unofficially known as Evans cars, named after Charles Evans, the Commissioner of Railways 1911-1918. Evans had recommended the design of this carriage as more suited for commuter travel. They became a common sight on Brisbane suburban lines for more than fifty years.

Evans cars had a side door on each compartment, rather than one door at the end of the carriage. Each door opened onto a pair of bench seats stretching across the car. This made it easier for passengers to board and leave. Evans cars had seats for 60 to 90 passengers according to the type, but accommodated many more with passengers standing during peak hour.

BU 1074 was built at the Ipswich Railway Workshops and entered service on 30 October1924. BU 1074 was written off in June 1984 and later restored at the Ipswich Railway Workshops for display in The Workshops Rail Museum.
