History and use
"Pompey" was originally builtin 1904 as a tank locomotive at Ipswich Railway Workshops. It was classed as a 6D13 1/2 and carried the running number "398". It was rebuilt as a tender locomotive using the tender from an obsolete B13 Class locomotive in 1937 and reclassed as a B13 1/2. It was written off in December 1953 but staff at Ipswich Railway Workshops kept the locomotive operational. It was nicknamed "Pompey" at the Workshops. When "Pompey" was finally retired from service in the 1970s it was preserved in a place of honour next to the main gate of the Workshops.
