History and use
Queensland Railways Diesel Electric Locomotive No.1281 was a member of the 30 strong 1270 Class built by English Electric, Rocklea, between 1964 and 1966. They were primarily used for bulk grain and general freight haulage, as well as export coal traffic in central Queensland.

No.1281 was supplied at the time Queensland Railways were celebrating their centenary and to mark the occasion, in July 1965, it was painted in a gold and white livery and named "Century". This colour scheme was maintained throughout the locomotive's working life and, as a consequence of its attractive livery, it was often used on the air-condition Sunlander passenger train service between Brisbane and Cairns.
