History and use
A section of rack rail from the Mount Morgan Rack Railway that ran between Moongan and Moonmera. This section of track was replaced by a deviation in 1950. The rack railway used the Abt System which was developed in Europe to enable locomotives to climb steeper grades than those a normal adhesion worked locomotive was capable of. The Mount Morgan Rack was the only rack railway on a Government owned railway in Australia. There was also a privately owned rack railway in the north-west of Tasmania.
