Description
Metal cast iron axle box cover with a raised inscription and borders. It has a hook shape at the bottom and aring shape at the top which allows it to be bolted to an axlebox but gives access for oiling purposes by sliding the cover away from the axle box.

History and use
Axle box covers like this were used to protect the axle bearing from dirt and water and to keep the oil pad (usually cotton waste) and oil in contact with the bearing to maintain lubrication.
