History and use
An Eastman View No. 1 camera made by the Eastman Kodak Company. This is an improved model of the Empire State camera, and it was manufactured between 1914 and 1924.
Photographic glass plates were used decades before film. The process to make them involved coating the glass plates in a light sensitive emulsion, usually silver salts. The plate was loaded into a camera and the emulsion captured the image on the plate with exposure to light, focused through the camera lens. By the late 19th century, pre-coated gelatin dry plates were available, which were more light sensitive, requiring a shorter exposure time.
