Description
Black on Red 1 (III) Ware bowl. Angular outline, almost straight sides. Hollow stemmed foot with wide flat base. Horizontal ridge below rim. Opposed vertical loop handles, oval in section on upper body. Reddish brown clay with slightly lustrous red-brown slip. Decoration in matt black paint. Solid paint on rim. On interior, two encircling bands below rim, five thin encircling bands below rim, five thin encircling bands on lower body, concentric circle on base. On exterior solid paint on foot rim. Encircling band on inner edge of the underside of foot rim. Two swastikas one above the other, at mid-body on each side of vessel. On handles, solid paint, trailing onto body and up ro rim. Cross mark, or 'swastika', common decorative motif in ancient Cyprus
Numerous black banding. 2 dark circles at rim. 6 dark circles inside bottom. Small circle centre bottom. 2 dark handles close to body. Dark ring outside at mid handle. 2 small swastikas each side at 90° to handle location. 7 rings outside below handles. Uneven rings and band on stem and foot. 1 medium and several small chips out of rim.
History and use
Finely decorated large cup, with perfectly executed geometric design - typified by banding and cross design - a common design motif.
