Description
Jug - white painted: "White Painted VI Cross Line Style jug. Ovoid body with flat base. Cylindrical neck widening to horizontal mouth with everted rim. Thick vertical handle, regular in section, from rim to shoulder. Buff-brown clay with thick cream-buff slip, decorated in matt red-brown to dark-brown paint, applied with a brush. Multiple groups of five parallel straight lines cross each other diagonally on the body, some extending onto base. Solid paint on rim and edge and centre of base. Sets of three and four horizontal bands on upper and lower neck. Groups of parallel horizontal lines on surface and solid paint on sides of handle. Rim slightly chipped. History and use
This white cross line style jug has been strikingly decorated with red to dark brown paint, which was consistently and confidently applied with a brush. Such cross line decorated vessels are known from several locations in eastern Cyprus. This vessel is rare as it is much smaller than similar vessels known.
