History and use
The needlework on this guest towel was done by Elsie Wright (1898-1986), an accomplished and highly regarded needlewoman. Born Elsie Sallaway, she married William Wright in 1916, only months before he enlisted and spent three years serving overseas during World War 1. In 1927 the couple moved to a soldier settler farm near Mt Mellum on the slopes of the Blackall Range. They both laboured to grow bananas and small crops and at night, Elsie practised her needlework, winning many prizes over the years. Life was hard on many soldier settler blocks and the prize money she won boosted the family income. At the end of her career in the late 1960s, she had won some 10,363 prizes and awards.
