History and use
This petticoat was part of a trousseau set made by Elsie Wright possibly for exhibition. Elsie’s work was exhibited at agricultural shows around Australia between 1924 and 1975 often under her married name Mrs W.C.C. Wright. She won 10 363 prizes for her needlework over her lifetime.

Elsie was the wife of a Queensland farmer and as such engaged in hardworking farm duties by day before pursuing her love of needlework by night. Elsie was a member of the Country Women’s Association, contributing to their handiwork exhibitions, and often donated her needlework as prizes for worthy local causes.

Queensland Museum holds many examples of her work in the Elsie Wright collection. The collection is significant not only for the aesthetic value of handmade garments but also demonstrates how the skill of women, which is often overlooked in historical accounts, can contribute financially and culturally.
