History and use
This white, cotton t-shirt depicts the ‘sun sails’ logo used during the 1988 World Exposition (commonly known as Expo ’88), which was held in Brisbane. The logo appeared across a wide range of Expo souvenir merchandise and was used as emblematic of the event in promotional articles and posters. The logo depicts a sun sail, or canopy, divided into panels, representing the notion of an Exposition as a multi-faceted cultural festival. The panels show aspects of the Expo ’88 experience, including circus acts, the visual arts, marching bands and theatre. The sights and sounds of this grand festival took place under the Queensland sun – as depicted in the last sun sail panel – and alongside the Brisbane river – the blue wavy line.
World Expo ’88 is often said to have been a turning point for Brisbane, and Queensland, having attracted large numbers of tourists and increased local interest and investment in arts and cultural industries.
