History and use
This light metal capsule was used to attach messages to carrier pigeons during World War 1. The message was inserted in the capsule which was then attached to the pigeon’s leg. Pigeons were used extensively during the 1914 - 1918 War as they were more reliable than many communications systems. An estimated 100,000 were used, of which 95% made it to their destination.

This capsule is believed to have come from Ypres in Belgium and is one of several 1914 - 1918 souvenirs from France and Belgium donated in 1939 by Miss M Taylor. This suggests that Miss Taylor had family members serving in the War who brought back mementoes for their loved ones.
