History and use
Limelight is a form of stage lighting used in theatres and music halls in the 19th century. The intensity of light could reach great distances across a room. The illumination is created when an oxyhydrogen flame is pointed at a stick of quicklime (calcium oxide) attached to the back of the lamp. Electric stage lighting replaced limelight lamps but the term ‘in the limelight’ is still used for someone who is the centre of attention.
