History and use
This metal box contained the Acts of Parliament which were passed into law by the Queensland Parliament in 1861 – the second year of its operation – and given Royal Assent by the Governor Sir George Bowen. The Clerk of the Parliament would have been responsible for this box and all the documents it contained.

Bills for introducing new laws or amending old laws are presented to the Legislative Assembly. Following debate and the passing of a Bill the agreed upon legislation, also known as an Act of Parliament, is signed by the Queensland Governor on behalf of the Queen. The Clerk of the Parliament is the custodian of all records and other documents laid before the Legislative Assembly, and is responsible for keeping the minutes of all proceedings in the Assembly, certifying all Bills passed by the Assembly and presenting them to the Governor for Royal Assent. The Clerk is appointed by the Governor on the recommendation of the Premier and is the highest ranking permanent official in the Parliament.

On 6 June 1859 Queen Victoria approved the creation of the new colony of Queensland, separating it from the colony of New South Wales. Sir George Ferguson Bowen arrived in Brisbane on 10 December 1859 as the new colony’s governor and officially proclaimed the Colony of Queensland.

The first elections were held in 1860 and the first Queensland Parliament was officially opened on 29 May of that year, with Sir Robert Herbert as the first Premier. The Queensland Parliament sat at the Old Convict Barracks, situated in Queen Street, until 1868 when the current Parliament House was constructed.
