History and use
This skipping rope is hand made from rope threaded through the handles of mill thread bobbins. The bobbins have metal ends with the inscription Saltaire. Saltaire is a model Victorian village near Bradford, England, that included a thriving cotton mill that was operational until the 1980s. This toy represents the tradition of ‘making do’ – that is, reusing materials in times of financial hardship or geographical isolation, particularly in the creation of tools and household items. The production of toys like this was particularly common in Queensland during the depression of the 1930s, and during the World Wars when materials were scarce.
