History and use
This League of Nations medallion reads on one side: "Pax", and on the other: "Geneve 15 Novembre 1920 premiere Assemblee de la Societe des Nations", which translates as ‘Geneva 15 November 1920 first assembly of the League of Nations’. The lid of the presentation box translates as ‘Official medal of the first assembly of the League of Nations Geneva 15 November 1920.

The League of Nations was established after World War 1 with one purpose: to prevent the outbreak of another war. Forty one nations, including Australia, sent representatives to Geneva for the first assembly. The League of Nations covenant was the first international political treaty signed by Australia in its own right; previously Britain had signed on behalf of its dominions.

This medallion in its original box came from the estate of Sir Littleton Ernest Groom KCMG, MA. Born and raised in Toowoomba, Queensland, Sir Littleton trained as a lawyer and was a Federal Member of Parliament almost continuously from 1901 until his death in 1936. In 1924 as Attorney General he led the Australian delegation to the Fifth Assembly of the League of Nations in Geneva. He was elected chair of the Legal Constitutional Committee, and remained active in the League for a number of years.

Despite the best intentions of the members of the League of Nations, 19 years after its formation World War 2 broke out. The League was dissolved in 1946 and its assets were transferred to the United Nations which had formed in 1945.
