History and use
This badge reads “St George's Day / 23rd April 1918 / St. George for England”. On that same day the St George’s Day Raid occurred during World War 1. The raid was a British naval action against German submarine bases on the Belgian coast. Although the raid was not a great success, it provided useful propaganda to renew public faith in the British Navy.
