History and use
The barbecue plate displays the well known Queensland icon ‘Mr Fourex’. The icon first appeared as a magazine advertisement for XXXX in October 1924. This was the time that XXXX bitter ale was relaunched. Mr Fourex soon became the face of the XXXX brand. He was a ‘cheeky little bloke’ who could always be found at the front bar of a hotel, spinning a yarn and sharing a laugh with his mates. The image of Mr Fourex that can be seen on this barbecue plate has developed over time: originally he appeared without a hat, then the ‘XXXX boater’ was added to help identify him with the company, and in the late 1970s the full glass of beer he holds was added. There have been many myths surrounding his ‘true identity’, one of which suggests he resembled Paddy Fitzgerald who was the General Manager of the Castlemaine Perkins Brewery, but these are mere coincidence. Mr Fourex has remained a central character in Queensland.
