History and use
This is a large fragment from a Roman pavement. Pavements were made from a variety or materials, including stones, clay, concrete, mosaics and bricks, all of which provided a hard surface resistant to traffic. Domestic pavements may have been covered by mats and textiles. This pavement of clay was made by hand. There remains a direct connection to the maker via the unintentional finger marks and impressions left in the wet clay prior to firing – perhaps a sign of lapsed concentration in an ancient moment in time.
