History and use
The Parthenon was dedicated to the Greek goddess of wisdom and war, Athena. The building is well known for its once richly painted external sculptures. However the interior of the building held a colossal gold and ivory representation of Athena. Visitors could only glimpse Athena through elaborate wooden doors.
