History and use
This piece of marble is from the House of Argus, once one of the grandest villas in Herculaneum. The reception room of the house presented the Greek myth of Argus, who was made to guard Io, a mortal lover of the God Zeus. This piece of marble was once part of a marble colonnade (peristyle) which surrounded a small garden in the rear courtyard of the house.
