History and use
This large square of marble is a 'Relic of Pompeii', from the House of Cornelio Ruffo. The house is named after a bust of Cornelius Rufus, which once sat in the Atrium of the house, near a small reflecting pool. This property had been held by the Cornelius family since the time of the Roman general, Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix, circa 138 BCE-78 BCE.
