History and use
This brass, monocular microscope was made circa 1850s by William Ladd, a “microscope and philosophical instrument maker” based in London. Ladd supplied microscopes to the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and the British War Department along with international clients. The microscope represents developments in the ways in which scientific research could be conducted, but equally represents the fine manufacturing traditions associated with scientific devices in this period. This is an example of an optical microscope, which uses light and a system of lenses to magnify an image of a small object. This microscope was held by the University of Queensland microscopy collection until its donation to the Queensland Museum in 2002.
