History and use
Maude Rose “Lores” Bonney was awarded the General Division Order of Australia medal in 1991 for her services to Australia, in particular her contribution to early aviation. This certificate would have been presented to Bonney at the conferral ceremony.
The Order of Australia medal was created in 1975 as part of a system of honours separating Australian achievements from British awards. There is a military and general division, and currently the Governor-General confers the awards.
Bonney was the first person to fly solo from Australia to South Africa, the first Australian woman to gain a commercial pilots license, the first woman to fly around Australia, and the first woman to fly from Australia to England. Her achievements were widely overshadowed by later, better publicised flights made by women. This certificate and accompanying medal are testaments to her achievements.
