History and use
Fibula are ancient brooches used to fasten clothing. As an item of personal dress and adornment, they invariably display variability in design, shape, and materials, and were distributed widely. This example shows some deterioration and was said to have been collected from a Tomb in Cumae, Italy. It performed the same function as todays' safety pin.
