History and use
In 79AD, the Roman towns of Herculaneum and Pompeii were destroyed following the eruption of Vesuvius, with large loss of life. This small blue glass mosaic piece was souvenired from the House of the Wounded Bear, named after the mosaic in the entranceway of the house, which depicted the myth of the beautiful goddess Callisto, having been turned into a bear, bleeding from a wound accidently inflicted by her son Arcas.
