History and use
This is a Crown Spa Seal "Dump" type of aerated softdrink bottle that was most likely filled in South Brisbane with water transported in bulk from the Helidon Spa Water Co. Ltd.
The natural springs at Helidon were utilised for their curative properties well before European settlement in the area. The Helidon spa came to be used as a popular camping/droving stop and in 1850 the Helidon Spa Water Company was established. It bottled the water on site at first, but popular demand for aerated water and soft drink meant the water had to be taken to Brisbane for mass bottling. The Helidon Spa water earned medals at the 1886 Colonial and Indian Exhibition in London and the 1888 Melbourne International Exhibition.
In 1926 a pool was built on the Helidon site, and it became a popular water park for leisure and restorative health.
