History and use
This suitcase belonged to Queensland designer, Olive Ashworth, who frequently travelled from her workplace in Brisbane to gather information and inspiration for her work. The stickers indicate places where Ashworth is known to have travelled, so it is likely she used this suitcase for work, and perhaps to store her sketches, photographs and designs.

Ashworth was interested in North Queensland specifically, after her trips in the early 1950s to work on a tourist brochure for a Heron Island resort. You can see the Heron Island and McLean’s Barrier Reef Cruise stickers on this well-worn suitcase. Ashworth became fascinated with images of the reef and rainforest and used imagery and symbols from these places in her prize-winning and popular textiles. She took photographs and sketches both on land and from underwater observatories in the area.
