History and use
18-year-old Lighthorseman George Sullivan was fatally wounded during World War 1’s Battle of Romani in 1916. His widowed mother spent the next decade corresponding with the War Office, sorting out her son’s affairs. The family kept this correspondence for many years, finally donating it to the Queensland Museum in 1983. Medallions, photographs and grave information from the military and government often provided all the information families ever had about the deaths of family members.
