History and use
Like many servicemen and women, 18-year-old Sullivan, of Charleville, western Queensland, collected curios while he was overseas. After being fatally wounded during the Battle of Romani in 1916, those in his possession were returned to his widowed mother, along with an inventory and related paperwork.
For the next decade, Mrs Sullivan corresponded with the War Office, sorting out her son’s affairs. The family kept his curios and correspondence for many years, finally donating it to the Queensland Museum in 1983. Medallions, photographs and grave information from the military and government often provided all the information families ever had about the deaths of family members.
